- Joe Dessert Instantly Killed
_______________________
Met his death this morning at 5:15 in Wabash Yards
Joe Dessert, head-end breakman on train 96, was killed this morning at about 5:15 in front of the bridge and building department in Wabash yeards while bringing his train in. Joe got off to open the switch in front of the B&B department and it supposed that when he stepped back upon the pilot, his foot slipped and he fell beneath the moving train. When the train stopped the fireman cut off his engine as Mr. Dessert was no where in sight, he supposded the unfortunate man had gone back to the caboose. The engine was run into the round house and the engineer and fireman with the rest of the crew went to their homes, supposing Mr. Dessert had done the same, never dreaming of the dreadful fate that had befallen their friend, a brother workman. When the train passed over Mr. Dessert, it caught him in some manner , dragging him as far as the machine shops where it dropped the body in the middle of the truack where it was found. The remains were not discovered until about 6:00 this morning when the switch engine crew had occaision to go to that part of the yard.
The body was only slightly disfigured, the left arm being broken in two places and the shoulder badly mashed. Mr. Dessert was 29 years of age and a member of the B. of R.T. He leaves to mourn his loss a mother, Mrs. Nick Dessert, three brothers Nick, Leo, and Rollie and two sisters, Misses Ella and May, all of this city, besides a large circle of friends. The funeral services have not yet been arranged.
