Notes |
- 09 Jan 2002 - Reference page 39 in the Clan Donald Supplement prepared by Duncan "Darby" MacDonald and the Chisholm Family Tree Maker File prepared by Duncan J. Chisholm.
26 Sep 2003 - Allan Gillis in Ottawa sent the following notes made by a Thelma McDonald in 1980.
"Captain Alexander Chisholm of the Royal Africa Corps, later Colonel and MLA, arrived in Glengarry in 1817 and because of his rank, was allotted 800 acres of land with two rivers flowing through it. The Captain, realizing the potential of the rivers, the Delisle and the Garry, and the viability of sheep farming, decided to build a mill. In 1848, the mill in Alexandria had burned, also the mill on the Delisle River called "Muillean Ur" (the new mill), one of the earliest mills in Lochiel. Colonel Chisholm's property of Lot 35, 2nd Concession, Lochiel Township, is now the home of the Glengarry Golf and Country Club."24 Mar 2001 - Reference page 112 in the Medlam PDF Files and page 163 in the History of Stormont, Dundas and Glengarry Counties. Alexander was MLA for Glengarry from 1836 to 1841. This same History stated that he married a Janet MacDonell in 1825 so DJC replaced the Miss MacDonald on page 112 in Medlam with Janet MacDonell.
Alexander had been a Captain in the Royal Africa Corps before emigrating to Canada in 1817. MacKenzie on page 153 stated that he also was Colonel-Commandant of the 2nd Battalion, Glengarry Militia.
25 Mar 2001 - Reference page 167 in the History of Stormont, Dundas and Glengarry Counties. He was a near relative of the Chisholm Chieftain and was an important witness in establishing the right of James Sutherland Chisholm of Montreal to succeed to the title and estate.
05 Jul 2001 - Alexander signed the Address to the Chief of the Chisholms in 1832.
22 Aug 2001 - Donald Chisholm in Cornwall recently sent DJC an email message re what was found on Colonel Alexander Chisholm's Headstone. He died in Alexandria on Oct. 19, 1854, aged 64 years. The Headstone was erected by Rev. James J. Chisholm, son of Colonel Alexander.
23 Oct 2001 - Reference Sheet 2, Chart 4, prepared by Duncan "Darby" MacDonald for an article on Colonel Chisholm.
29 Mar 2004 - Bob Chisholm in England determined from British Army Lists that Alexander was a Lieutenant, not a Captain, when he went on half pay on March 25, 1817, the year he emigrated.

The Clan Fraser Society gave his year of birth as 1803 which does not equate with him being an Officer in 1817. DJC has retained the 1790 on the Medlam Charts.
