Notes |
- 28 Sep 2002 - He was admitted to the Nova Scotia Bar on November 16, 1891. Gazetted as Kings Counsel in 1908. He was Liberal Whip in the House of Commons from 1909 to 1917, and in 1922 he was appointed Chief Liberal Whip for the Liberal Government of Prime Minister William L. MacKenzie King.
Many of the family details to follow re his descendants came from a Family History prepared by a John B. Carney, entitled "One Kyte Family of Cape Breton". George first met "Tena" when he was a student at St. F. X. and she was attending Mount St. Bernard.
George was a member of the Liberal Party at a time when Bishop Cameron was publically supporting the Conservative Party and insisting that his Priests do likewise. The Parish Priest at St. Peters was a vociferous Conservative and used his Pulpit to air his views, especially around Election time. As the family occupied two pews in Church, the rear pew for the younger children with their mother and the front pew for the older children with their father, George was directly in the line of fire. After one particularly pointed political sermon, George warned the Pastor that if he continued to attack the Liberals from the Pulpit, he would be forced to respond from his pew. The attacks on the Liberals ceased.
The "History of Antigonish" by Dr. Patrick Walsh has a picture of George Kyte on page 108.
